Speech -- Avoid The First Person

Some of you used first-person references outside of quotes, noting binge drinking by our young people, that we think of beer and wine as soft liquor, alcohol is killing you, ect.

First-person references inside of quotes are fine, but outside of quotes -- even in paraphrases -- are not allowed. First-person references are vague and betray a journalist's role as neutral observer.

And there's usually a more specific word to find that can better replace the first person. Or sometimes even no word at all. You can note binge drinking by young people (and simply throw away the our), that society thinks of beer and wine as soft liquor (with society replacing we) and that alcohol kills people (with people replacing you).
