Squirrels -- The Mystery Of The Missing Nut Graf

A few of you had missing nut grafs, where you went straight form the lede to a blow-by-blow telling of a story.

The nut graf is helpful in amplifying and detailing the generalities offered in the lede. Like here:

Lansing Community College officials have found the culprit in a recent string of vehicle damages at the school: squirrels.

The animals have been responsible for hundreds of dollars of damage in recent weeks, building nests in engines and chewing through electrical wiring in some vehicles, faculty members said.

Then the writer launches into Oliver Brookes said this and the nutritionist said that.

Without the nut graf, it would take the reader several paragraphs to find out exactly what kind of vehicle damage the squirrels are doing. The reader would only know the summation after reading each person's account and putting it together. The nut graf does the putting it together for the reader up front.
